Shillong, Meghalaya: In a recent Rajya Sabha discussion, Meghalaya MP coal mining expert Dr. Wanweiroy Kharlukhi highlighted the urgent need for scientific coal mining approvals in the state. Speaking on behalf of affected communities, he raised concerns about the long-standing coal mining ban and its unintended consequences, including the rise of drug smuggling in former mining regions.

Dr. Kharlukhi explained that the coal mining ban, implemented to protect the environment, has seriously affected local livelihoods. Families dependent on mining for income have faced prolonged economic hardship. District councils have also struggled with revenue shortfalls, impacting staff salaries and essential public services. The Meghalaya MP coal mining discussion emphasised that these challenges have created uncertainty and social instability in many communities.

The MP argued that scientific coal mining could provide a balanced solution, combining economic growth with environmental protection. He urged the Union Government to streamline approvals for projects that follow environmental guidelines, ensuring sustainable opportunities for local communities. According to him, well-regulated mining could reduce unemployment and prevent social issues arising from economic distress.

Alongside economic concerns, Dr. Kharlukhi highlighted that former mining areas have become vulnerable to illegal activities, including drug smuggling, due to limited employment options. He called for coordinated efforts between state and central authorities to strengthen law enforcement, curb illegal networks, and provide rehabilitation and skill development programs for affected populations. The remarks by Meghalaya MP coal mining representatives underline the importance of sustainable development in these regions.

The discussion underscores the complex link between environmental policies, livelihoods, and social challenges in Meghalaya. The Meghalaya MP coal mining concerns emphasise the need for policies that balance economic revival, environmental protection, and social stability, ensuring a sustainable future for the state’s communities.
