SHILLONG, Jan 10, 2026: Justice Revati Mohite Dere assumed charge as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court on Friday, marking an important moment in the judicial history of the state. With this appointment, she becomes the second woman to serve as Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.
The oath of office was administered at an official ceremony in Shillong in the presence of senior judges, members of the legal fraternity, and government officials. Her appointment follows established constitutional procedures and recommendations made by the Supreme Court Collegium.
Justice Revati Mohite Dere Meghalaya High Court takes over the leadership at a time when the court continues to handle a wide range of cases related to constitutional matters, civil disputes, criminal law, tribal rights, and administrative issues affecting different parts of the state, including Khasi Hills, Garo Hills, and Jaintia Hills.
Before her elevation as Chief Justice, Justice Dere served as a judge of the Bombay High Court, one of the country’s busiest constitutional courts. During her judicial career, she dealt with diverse matters involving criminal procedure, constitutional safeguards, and individual rights. Members of the Bar in Meghalaya noted that her experience in handling complex legal questions is expected to contribute to the smooth functioning of the High Court.
The Meghalaya High Court plays a crucial role in ensuring access to justice and interpreting laws relevant to the unique social and legal framework of the state. Legal observers say continuity, administrative discipline, and timely case management remain key priorities for the institution.
Justice Revati Mohite Dere Meghalaya High Court appointment also reflects the gradual increase in women holding senior positions within India’s higher judiciary. While such appointments remain limited in number, they are viewed as steps toward broader representation within constitutional institutions.
Officials and advocates present at the ceremony extended formal greetings to the new Chief Justice. Routine court work is expected to continue without disruption under her leadership.
As she begins her tenure, Justice Revati Mohite Dere Meghalaya High Court will oversee judicial proceedings across the state, with focus remaining on rule of law, judicial independence, and fair legal process for all citizens of Meghalaya.
