Shillong, Jan 11, 2026 – The State Council of Science, Technology and Environment (SCSTE) in Meghalaya has launched a new bamboo green skill course that has been approved nationally, marking a boost for youth skill development in the state. The programme is designed to help young people build skills related to bamboo craft and green livelihoods that can support local economies and sustainable development.
The course is being offered through the EIACP Programme Centre–Hub hosted by SCSTE, which recently began training participants under a nationally recognised framework. For the first time, students in Meghalaya can enrol in a structured bamboo skill programme that meets national certification standards, allowing them to gain technical knowledge and practical experience in bamboo craft.
Officials said the course will include both classroom instruction and hands-on training, helping learners understand the full cycle of bamboo processing, craft production, and related enterprise opportunities. The programme aims to support self-employment, green entrepreneurship, and job creation in rural and urban parts of Meghalaya. Organisers also noted that bamboo has long been an important natural resource in the state and that specialised training can help unlock its economic potential.
Participants selected for the course will receive guidance on how to create marketable products, improve craftsmanship, and potentially start their own small businesses. Many students who have already taken part in early sessions expressed optimism about the opportunities this training could open up, especially in the expanding market for eco-friendly goods.
The launch of the Meghalaya bamboo green skill course is seen as part of wider efforts to expand skill development and sustainable livelihoods under green skill frameworks. Local leaders said they hope the programme will serve as a model for similar training initiatives in other sectors that promote environmental awareness and economic growth.
As the course continues into 2026, officials are encouraging eligible youth from across districts to consider applying and make use of the newly available skill development opportunity.
