Shillong, Jan 16, 2026: The Meghalaya government has introduced a Meghalaya local language job requirement for recruitment to all posts under the District Selection Committee, officials said on Thursday. Under the new measure, candidates must pass a qualifying test in Khasi or Garo depending on the district where they seek appointment.
Authorities explained that this local language requirement is intended to ensure that government employees are able to communicate effectively with the public they serve, particularly in areas where Khasi and Garo remain the primary means of everyday communication. Candidates applying for jobs in the Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills will be tested in the Khasi language, while those seeking positions in the Garo Hills region must demonstrate competence in Garo.
The qualifying exam on local language proficiency Meghalaya will form part of the eligibility criterion for future recruitment processes conducted by District Selection Committees across the state. Officials said the test will focus on basic comprehension, writing, and usage of the respective languages so that selected candidates can interact with residents and carry out administrative functions without linguistic barriers.
Government sources noted that study materials and guidance are expected to be provided to help applicants prepare for the language test. They also stressed that while language skills are now required for eligibility, support will be given to prospective candidates to ensure a fair and inclusive process.
The decision reflects a broader emphasis on strengthening community engagement and enhancing the effectiveness of public services, particularly in rural districts where local languages like Khasi and Garo shape everyday life and governance.
