Shillong, Jan, 24,: Governance issues in Garo Hills have been cited by several pressure groups and civil society organisations as a key reason behind increasing tensions in the region, with calls growing louder for corrective administrative action.
Governance issues in Garo Hills, according to these groups, have persisted for years and have slowly affected public confidence in institutions. They stated that delays in administrative responses, weak monitoring systems, and lack of accountability have created an environment where public dissatisfaction continues to grow.

Pressure groups said that recent developments should be viewed as warning signs rather than isolated events. They believe unresolved governance concerns have made communities more vulnerable to unrest, as long-standing grievances remain unaddressed. According to them, the absence of timely solutions has allowed frustration to build across different sections of society.
Members of the organisations pointed out that gaps in public service delivery have added to the strain. They referred to irregular access to essential services, limited employment opportunities, and slow grievance redressal mechanisms as factors that affect everyday life in Garo Hills. Such conditions, they said, weaken trust between citizens and authorities.
The groups urged the state administration to engage more actively with local stakeholders and community representatives. They stressed the need for transparent decision-making, regular communication, and consistent policy implementation to restore stability in the region.
They also emphasised that maintaining peace requires long-term governance reforms rather than temporary measures. According to them, sustained development, fair administration, and inclusive governance are essential to prevent further escalation of tensions.
While there has been no detailed official response so far, pressure groups have indicated that they will continue to raise governance-related concerns until meaningful steps are taken to address the underlying issues affecting Garo Hills.
