Tura, Jan 24: Missing man found dead after authorities recovered the body of a 53-year-old individual from the Doldegre locality located behind Tura Medical College in Tura town of West Garo Hills district, Meghalaya, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Mensing M. Marak, who originally hails from Garobadha under the Maljanggre area. At the time he went missing, he was staying in the ITI area of Tura. His disappearance was reported on December 13, prompting concern among family members and residents.
Information available with the police indicates that the body was discovered during land-clearing work carried out by villagers in the Doldegre area. After noticing human remains at the site, the villagers informed the local Nokma, who then passed the information to Araimile Police Station.
Police teams reached the location soon after receiving the report and carried out recovery procedures in accordance with legal norms. Officials said the condition of the body pointed to a prolonged period between death and recovery.
The remains have been taken to Tura Medical College, where a post-mortem examination is scheduled. Samples have also been collected for DNA analysis to support formal identification and documentation.
Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills district, Abraham T. Sangma, stated that police personnel had been involved in search efforts since the missing complaint was registered. He said the recovery was made following specific inputs received during the investigation. He added that, based on current findings, there are no clear signs suggesting criminal involvement, though the medical report will provide final clarity.
Police said procedural investigation will continue, and further information will be shared once forensic and medical findings are reviewed.
