Shillong, Jan 28: Nationwide bank strike disrupted public sector banking services across Meghalaya on Tuesday, with branch-level operations affected as bank employees joined a one-day nationwide work stoppage, officials said.
Several public sector bank branches in Shillong and other districts remained closed or operated with minimal staff during working hours. Customers reported difficulty accessing counter-based services such as cash deposits, withdrawals, cheque submissions, and account-related requests.
The strike was observed by employees affiliated with unions representing public sector lenders. The action followed unresolved service-related demands that remain under official consideration at the central level.
Bank officials confirmed that routine branch activities were the most affected during the strike period. Transactions requiring in-person verification or staff approval were deferred until the next working day.
Digital banking services, including UPI payments, mobile banking applications, and internet banking platforms, continued to function across the state. ATM services were available in most areas, though cash availability varied at some locations due to logistical constraints.
Private sector banks operating in Meghalaya were not part of the strike and maintained normal operations throughout the day, allowing customers continued access to both branch and digital services.
Bank authorities indicated that the strike was limited to Tuesday, with normal services expected to resume after the protest concluded.
