Rilbong to Baniun road likely to be completed by February

Rilbong to Baniun road

Shillong, Jan 28: Rilbong to Baniun road construction, part of Package 1 of the Shillong-Dawki road project, is expected to be completed by February as contractors continue work on the four-lane section connecting Rilbong and Baniun.

Officials said Dense Bituminous Macadam and bituminous concrete work have been completed in multiple sections, while finishing tasks including road markings, guardrails, and signage installation are in progress.

Earlier delays caused by coordination with Defence authorities and pipeline installations with the Public Health Engineering department have been resolved, allowing uninterrupted construction. Weather conditions may slightly affect the timeline, but the main road is anticipated to be operational by February.

The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), the implementing agency, has issued show-cause notices to contractors responsible for delays and is reviewing their responses. Progress on other packages of the Shillong-Dawki project remains slower, and authorities are considering retendering for delayed sections.

Once completed, the four-lane road between Rilbong and Baniun is expected to improve traffic flow and connectivity for commuters and commercial vehicles traveling toward Dawki. Minor ancillary work may continue after the formal opening, officials noted.
