Shillong, Jan 28: Sanbor Shullai has opposed the application of different land rent and tax structures in cantonment and municipal areas, stating that all landowners should be treated under a uniform system.
The minister highlighted that having separate tax rates for cantonment and municipal jurisdictions could create confusion among property owners and complicate administrative procedures. He emphasised that clarity and consistency in taxation are essential for equitable governance.
Officials present at the meeting acknowledged Shullai’s concerns and said that a detailed review of current tax structures would be conducted. Departments involved include the municipal administration and cantonment boards, which are expected to prepare a report on the feasibility of a uniform taxation system.
Shullai’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions regarding land rent and property tax policies in Shillong and surrounding regions. Residents currently face different charges depending on whether their land falls under municipal or cantonment jurisdiction, prompting calls for standardisation.
