SHILLONG, Jan 31: Meghalaya Police CCTV Installation has been reported near the Rani Shiva temple in the Rani–Jirang area, where local residents observed surveillance cameras installed by personnel from the sub-police station. The move coincides with ongoing anti-mining operations in the region.
Residents have expressed concerns about monitoring close to a religious site and sought clarification regarding the purpose and scope of the surveillance. Police officials stated that the CCTV system is intended to support law enforcement activities, particularly in overseeing operations related to illegal mining and ensuring public safety in the area.
Authorities confirmed that the cameras are installed according to standard procedures and will be operated strictly for official purposes. The footage will be used to monitor mining activity and maintain security, with no unwarranted observation of community activities.
The installation covers multiple strategic points around the temple vicinity to monitor compliance with mining regulations. Officials indicated that the number of cameras and their coverage is determined based on the area’s terrain and accessibility to ensure effective oversight.
Local representatives are expected to hold discussions with the Rani–Jirang sub-police station to review operational guidelines, including the duration of monitoring and the handling of recorded footage. These discussions aim to maintain transparency and address public concerns while supporting law enforcement objectives.
