Lower Balian Industrial Unit Shutdown After Residents Lock Factory Gate in Byrnihat

Lower Balian Industrial Unit Shutdown

Byrnihat, Feb 5: The Lower Balian industrial unit shutdown took place after residents of the village locked the gate of an industrial facility in Byrnihat, Ri-Bhoi district, claiming the factory continued certain activities despite earlier concerns raised by the community.

Residents gathered outside the premises and stopped the movement of trucks entering and leaving the compound. Villagers said heavy vehicles were still transporting industrial materials, including clinker, which they believe contributed to dust and pollution in the surrounding residential areas.

During the protest, villagers reportedly asked representatives of the company to produce valid operational documents and environmental clearances. According to those present, the required papers were not shown at the site, after which residents decided to close the factory gate as a precautionary step until authorities review the matter.

Locals also expressed concern that earlier inspections by officials did not lead to visible action, which increased frustration among residents. Many said they had repeatedly complained about dust and pollution affecting homes and daily life in the locality but felt their concerns had not been addressed quickly enough.

The incident drew attention from nearby communities as well, as Byrnihat continues to witness frequent industrial and transport movement due to its location along the Assam–Meghalaya border. Residents involved in the protest maintained that industries should operate only after meeting required environmental and operational norms.

Meanwhile, officials are expected to examine the situation and verify the operational status of the unit. Villagers stated that the gate would remain locked until responsible authorities confirm whether the factory has the necessary permissions to function. The Lower Balian industrial unit shutdown highlights ongoing concerns among residents regarding industrial activity and environmental conditions in the area.

No major law-and-order disturbance was reported during the protest, and the situation remained peaceful as residents dispersed after securing the gate. Authorities are likely to engage with both community representatives and factory management to resolve the issue in accordance with regulations.
