Balat, April 3, 2026: For several years, residents of Dangardop and Lalpani villages along the Umngi River have been facing sleepless nights due to recurring Umngi River flood incidents and continuous erosion of river embankments. With the embankments located very close to several houses, many families have been living under constant psychological fear, particularly during the night when the risk feels higher.
The situation becomes more concerning during the monsoon season, when heavy rainfall causes the river water level to rise significantly. In many instances, the increase in water level creates an alarming situation for families residing near the riverbanks, forcing them to remain alert throughout the night.
This year, however, a sense of hope has emerged among residents as embankment protection work is progressing in a scheduled manner. Construction is currently underway at Dangardop and is expected to be completed within the next one to two months, according to residents.
In Lalpani village, full-scale construction has not yet started, but preparatory work has already been carried out. The surface has been flattened for the placement of boulders, and the next phase of construction is expected to begin soon after the completion of work at Dangardop.

Residents have expressed relief over the ongoing work and remain hopeful that, unlike previous years, they may experience safer and more peaceful nights. Over time, many households have already shifted to safer locations and constructed new homes as a precaution against river erosion and flooding.
The impact of the Umngi River flood has also been felt by students from affected families. Many are often required to move to safer places during critical periods or continue their daily routines under stress and uncertainty.
Residents said the ongoing embankment construction is expected to reduce the impact of Umngi River flood and provide a sense of safety and stability in the coming months.
The affected villages are located close to the international border, East Khasi Hills Meghalaya approximately 100 km from the state capital Shillong.
