Balat, April 4: The Balat RCC Bridge Construction at Balat Market in South West Khasi Hills is progressing, bringing relief and hope to residents, traders and visitors who have long faced difficulties due to the deteriorating condition of the existing wooden bridge.
Balat Market, located along the banks of the Umngi River, is one of the oldest and largest markets in the border areas of East Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills. The weekly market, held every Monday, draws a large number of buyers and sellers from surrounding villages and remote border regions. Owing to its proximity to the international border with Bangladesh, the market serves as a key hub for the exchange of essential commodities.
For years, the old wooden bridge has posed serious challenges, particularly for vehicles carrying heavy loads. Despite repeated repair work, the bridge often returns to a weakened and unsafe condition within a short period. During peak market hours, congestion increases and movement becomes difficult, affecting both pedestrians and transport vehicles.

To ensure continued connectivity during the construction phase, a temporary sub-way has been created alongside the main bridge site. This arrangement is currently being used by vehicles and pedestrians, helping to ease movement while work on the RCC bridge continues.
Once completed, the new bridge is expected to significantly improve the flow of traffic and ensure safer passage for goods carriers and the general public. The upgraded infrastructure is also likely to support smoother business transactions and strengthen connectivity in the region.
Situated around 97.8 kilometres from Shillong, Balat Market experiences heavy traffic, especially on weekly market days. Local residents, shopkeepers and regular visitors have expressed optimism about the project, stating that the new bridge will enhance safety, convenience and overall market activity.
The construction of the RCC bridge is being viewed as an important step towards improving infrastructure and supporting the daily needs and livelihoods of people in the area.
