Shillong, Feb 4: Concerns over pending administrative decisions in Garo Hills have resurfaced after Bernard Marak Raises Garo Hills Governance Delay Issue in a letter addressed to Meghalaya Home Minister Prestone Tynsong, seeking urgent implementation of earlier commitments.
The Tura MDC stated that several decisions taken during the State Level Monitoring Committee meeting in September 2025 have not been acted upon. He noted that proposals such as conducting review meetings every two months, appointing nodal officers, and setting up district-level committees remain pending months after they were discussed.
According to the letter, a follow-up meeting scheduled for November 2025 was not held, leading to delays in reviewing matters concerning rehabilitation measures and monitoring of unresolved issues in the region. Marak said the absence of regular meetings has slowed progress on matters affecting local communities.
He further alleged that minutes circulated after the September meeting did not fully include key points raised during discussions, creating confusion over the status of certain proposals. He stated that several stakeholders continue to await action on matters placed before authorities.
The communication also highlighted law-and-order concerns linked to alleged illegal quarry operations and transportation of minerals in parts of Garo Hills. Marak claimed that while FIRs have reportedly been registered in some cases, review meetings at state and district levels have not been convened to examine developments or coordinate responses.
He additionally referred to incidents involving violence in certain areas and questioned land-related decisions in Sixth Schedule regions, alleging that some lease arrangements could affect tribal land safeguards if not reviewed properly.
As Bernard Marak Raises Garo Hills Governance Delay Issue, he has called for immediate review meetings, appointment of nodal officers, and approval of district committee proposals previously forwarded. Copies of the letter have also been sent to central and state authorities seeking attention to the matter.
