Williamnagar, Feb 5: Police in East Garo Hills registered a case after receiving complaints about suspected illegal coal transportation in parts of the district, leading to the filing of an East Garo Hills illegal coal transportation FIR.
Local organisations informed authorities that trucks carrying coal were seen moving through certain areas without clear transport documentation. Residents said the vehicles were noticed mainly during night hours, which created concerns among nearby communities.
The complaint was formally lodged at Rongmil police station, where groups requested officials to check whether transportation rules were being followed. According to the complaint, several trucks were allegedly transporting coal along main road routes in the district and moving towards locations outside Meghalaya.
Residents living near the transport routes reported repeated movement of heavy trucks through local roads. Some community members said such activity often affects normal traffic flow and raises doubts about whether required permits are being used for transportation.
After receiving the complaint, police registered the FIR and began preliminary verification of the matter. Officials indicated that further steps will depend on findings from checks on transport documents, vehicle ownership details, and permissions related to coal movement.
Authorities have not announced any arrests so far. Police sources said the investigation will focus on confirming whether transportation followed legal procedures and identifying those involved if violations are found.
