Shillong | Jan 13, 2026: The East Khasi Hills traffic crackdown has officially begun as police step up enforcement measures across Shillong and nearby areas. The initiative aims to improve road safety, reduce accidents, and ensure disciplined driving throughout the district. Authorities have observed a rise in traffic violations, including illegal parking, reckless driving, and unsafe maneuvers, prompting this intensified action.
Under the new guidelines, vehicles parked in no-parking zones will face strict fines. First-time offenders will be charged ₹500, while repeated violations can attract penalties of ₹1,500 to ₹2,000. Vehicles causing blockages may be towed at the owner’s expense. Taxi operators, transport vehicles, and private motorists have been instructed to use designated parking areas to prevent congestion on busy streets.
Lane discipline and adherence to traffic signals are a major focus of the crackdown. Motorists are urged to avoid dangerous overtaking, abrupt lane changes, and speeding, especially in areas with high pedestrian activity. Police officials noted that such behavior has contributed to numerous accidents in recent months, making enforcement a top priority.
Two-wheeler riders are also under close supervision. Those found riding without helmets, performing unsafe maneuvers, or exceeding speed limits could face fines starting at ₹1,000. Authorities highlighted that maintaining safe driving practices for two-wheelers is crucial to preventing collisions and protecting vulnerable road users.
The police have also issued strict instructions for vehicles carrying loose or hazardous loads. Trucks and other commercial transporters must ensure materials like hay, straw, or construction debris are properly covered and secured. Failure to comply may result in fines of up to ₹2,000, as unsecured loads pose significant risks to other commuters.
Drunk driving remains a high-priority concern. Motorists caught exceeding legal blood alcohol limits may face fines of up to ₹10,000 and imprisonment for up to six months, or both. Police urge drivers to comply with all safety regulations to avoid penalties and protect lives.
Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem appealed to the public, commuters, and transport operators to cooperate with the enforcement drive. He emphasized that disciplined driving benefits everyone by reducing congestion, improving traffic flow, and ensuring the safety of pedestrians and motorists alike.
This East Khasi Hills traffic crackdown is part of a broader effort to enhance road discipline and reduce accidents across the district. Regular patrols, monitoring, and strict fines will continue as authorities work to make Shillong roads safer for all residents and visitors.
