Meghalaya Bangladesh Border Fencing Work Accelerated, Says CM Conrad Sangma

Meghalaya Bangladesh Border Fencing

Shillong, Jan 16, 2026: The Meghalaya government has stepped up efforts to complete the remaining stretches of the Meghalaya Bangladesh border fencing, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said on Thursday, adding that the progress is being closely monitored in coordination with the Union government.

The Chief Minister said that border fencing in Meghalaya has faced delays due to challenging terrain, riverine areas, and the presence of villages close to the international boundary. He noted that the state administration is working with central agencies to address land-related and technical issues so that the project can move forward smoothly.

According to officials, regular review meetings are being held to assess the status of the fencing work in border districts across the Garo Hills, Khasi Hills, and Jaintia Hills regions. In areas where physical fencing is difficult, alternative border management measures are being examined to ensure security without disrupting the daily lives of residents.

Sangma said the objective of the Meghalaya Bangladesh border fencing is to strengthen border security while also protecting the interests of people living in border villages. He emphasized that community consultations are being carried out to resolve concerns related to access to farmland, movement, and livelihoods.

The state government has also linked border infrastructure development with broader initiatives aimed at improving roads, connectivity, and public services in border areas. Officials said that improving living conditions in these regions is essential for long-term stability and effective border management.

Meghalaya shares a long and sensitive international boundary with Bangladesh, making border security and surveillance a key concern for both the state and the Centre. Over the years, some stretches have remained unfenced due to administrative, geographical, and social challenges.

The Chief Minister said the government remains committed to completing the pending work in a balanced manner, ensuring that national security requirements are met while respecting local realities. He added that cooperation between the state and central governments will continue in the coming months to bring the project closer to completion.
