Meghalaya border vigilance matter highlighted by MLA Lahkmen Rymbui

Meghalaya border vigilance

SHILLONG, Jan 10 2026: The Meghalaya border vigilance matter received renewed attention as Cabinet Minister and Amlarem MLA Lahkmen Rymbui urged stronger monitoring along the India–Bangladesh border to address emerging security concerns. Speaking to reporters, Rymbui emphasized the importance of coordinated surveillance between local authorities, the Border Security Force (BSF), and community representatives.

Rymbui noted that although Meghalaya has traditionally maintained peaceful relations with Bangladesh, recent regional developments could increase the risk of unauthorised movement across the border. He highlighted that vigilant monitoring in sensitive border areas is crucial to preventing illegal crossings and maintaining public safety.

The minister praised local police, border villages, and BSF personnel for their efforts in maintaining security but acknowledged that occasional attempts to cross the border illegally continue. He stressed the active involvement of residents living near the frontier, urging headmen and village councils to report any suspicious activity promptly.

Officials from East Khasi Hills and West Garo Hills districts confirmed that enhanced patrolling and coordinated efforts with central forces are underway. Authorities also aim to maintain communication channels with local communities to ensure early detection of any unusual movement.

Addressing concerns raised on social media about unmonitored areas, Rymbui urged citizens to rely on verified official information. He underlined that terrain challenges exist, but regular patrols and temporary checkpoints are effective measures to maintain border security.

Community leaders added that awareness campaigns could help residents differentiate between normal cross-border movement and activities that require reporting. Such collaboration, they noted, strengthens trust between authorities and border communities.

The Meghalaya border vigilance matter underscores the state government’s commitment to public safety and proactive security measures along the frontier, ensuring peace and stability in border districts.
