Shillong, Jan 23: Meghalaya Congress rural employment concern was raised on thursday as the state unit of the party questioned recent changes affecting rural job programmes, warning that such decisions could weaken employment security for thousands of families living in villages across the state.
Addressing a public meeting in South West Khasi Hills district, leaders of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee said rural employment initiatives play an important role in supporting households that lack stable income sources. They stated that government-backed work programmes often help families manage difficult economic periods.
Party representatives explained that many villages in Meghalaya depend on seasonal employment provided through public schemes to meet daily household needs. Such programmes, they said, support food security, education expenses, and healthcare access for rural families.
Speakers at the meeting highlighted that employment security is especially important in hilly and remote regions where private-sector job opportunities remain limited. When income is predictable, families are better able to plan for farming activities and other livelihood needs.
The Congress also stressed the importance of transparency and timely wage payments. According to leaders, delays or administrative uncertainty can reduce trust in employment programmes and discourage worker participation.
The party urged authorities to review policy decisions carefully and consult local communities before implementing major changes. Leaders said that decisions affecting livelihoods should be guided by ground realities and long-term development goals.
They further noted that stable rural income helps reduce migration from villages to urban areas, strengthening local economies and community stability. Employment security, they said, is closely connected to broader social outcomes such as education continuity and public health.
Community members and local leaders attended the programme, reflecting growing public interest in employment and livelihood issues across the state. The Congress stated it will continue raising such concerns through public engagement and dialogue.
