Meghalaya Consumer Rights Awareness Programme Held in Shillong

Meghalaya Consumer Rights Awareness

Shillong, Dec 19, 2025: A Meghalaya consumer rights awareness programme was organised in Shillong to educate residents about their legal rights as consumers and the importance of informed purchasing decisions. The Meghalaya consumer rights awareness initiative aimed to strengthen public understanding of consumer protection laws and grievance redressal mechanisms available in the state.

The awareness event was conducted at Mawklot, East Khasi Hills, with participation from students, local residents, shopkeepers, and representatives of community organisations. Officials explained how consumers in Meghalaya can protect themselves against unfair trade practices, misleading advertisements, and poor-quality goods or services.

Focus on Consumer Protection and Legal Awareness

During the Meghalaya consumer rights awareness programme, speakers highlighted the significance of understanding consumer laws in everyday life. Sessions covered topics such as consumer complaints, product warranties, pricing transparency, and the role of consumer courts.

Officials guided participants on how to file complaints through proper channels and encouraged citizens to report unethical business practices. Emphasis was placed on the need for consumers to retain bills, check product labels, and seek redressal when their rights are violated.

Interactive Sessions and Public Participation

The programme included interactive discussions where participants raised questions related to common consumer issues faced in Meghalaya. Concerns related to overpricing, defective products, and service delays were discussed in detail during the Meghalaya consumer rights awareness session.

Students and young participants were encouraged to spread awareness among family members and local communities. Organisers noted that informed consumers play a crucial role in promoting fair trade practices and accountability.

Strengthening Consumer Awareness Across Meghalaya

Organisers stated that the Meghalaya consumer rights awareness programme is part of a broader effort to empower citizens across Shillong, Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills, and Garo Hills. Similar initiatives are expected to be organised in other districts to ensure wider outreach.

Community members appreciated the initiative, saying such programmes help people better understand their rights and responsibilities as consumers. Officials stressed that consumer awareness is essential for building a transparent and fair marketplace in Meghalaya.
