SHILLONG, Jan 27 : Meghalaya fastest growing state has emerged as a key economic performer in India, recording a 9.66% real Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) growth in 2025, and is on track to triple the size of its economy by 2032, Governor CH Vijayashankar said in his Republic Day address here on Monday. The growth rate places the state among the top performers in national economic expansion.
Vijayashankar said Meghalaya has maintained close to a 10% average growth rate for three consecutive years since the COVID‑19 pandemic, reflecting sustained economic momentum. As part of the Mission 10 initiative aligned with the Meghalaya Excellence Framework, the state aims to expand its economy from about USD 5 billion in 2022 to around USD 16 billion by 2032.
The governor highlighted several development areas contributing to the state’s performance, including infrastructure expansion, improved governance, and enhanced service delivery. He said rural connectivity has increased with over 3,500 kilometres of roads built under central and state schemes, and around Rs 2,200 crore sanctioned for road projects last year.
Vijayashankar also noted progress in tourism, with Meghalaya recording 16 lakh visitors in 2024 and targeting 20 lakh by 2028. The Meghalaya Homestay Mission 2025 offers financial assistance for new homestay projects to boost local hospitality.
Agricultural output has expanded, and the sector’s share in GSDP has grown, with nearly two lakh farmers receiving benefits under the PM‑KISAN scheme. Cultural and creative sectors, including music festivals, are seen as emerging contributors to job creation and local business growth in Meghalaya fastest-growing state.
On security and governance, Vijayashankar said the law and order situation in the state remained stable over the past year, with Village Defence Parties activated in priority areas along international borders.
The governor’s remarks at the 77th Republic Day event underscored the state’s focus on balanced growth across sectors and its efforts to improve citizens’ quality of life.
