Jowai, Feb 5: The court verdict in the Meghalaya husband life imprisonment case has brought closure to a long-pending murder case in West Jaintia Hills, where a man was convicted for killing his wife by setting her on fire inside their home nearly two decades ago.
The Sessions Court in Jowai found the accused guilty after reviewing evidence and hearing witnesses during the trial process. The court ruled that the incident, which occurred in September 2006, resulted in the death of the woman due to severe burn injuries.
Court records stated that the incident happened on September 8, 2006, when the man allegedly poured kerosene on his wife and set her on fire inside their residence following a domestic dispute. The victim later died from the injuries despite efforts to save her.
During investigation and court hearings, statements given by the victim before her death were considered important evidence. These statements, along with other materials presented by investigators, helped establish the events leading to the crime.
In the Meghalaya husband life imprisonment case, Sessions Judge N. A. Khan pronounced life imprisonment for the convict under relevant legal provisions. The court also imposed a fine of ₹5,000 along with the life sentence.
Officials said the case went through a long legal process involving investigation, witness examination, and court hearings before reaching its final judgment. The verdict was delivered in Sessions Case No. 37 of 2015 after completion of trial procedures.
Authorities confirmed that the convicted man will now serve the life sentence as ordered by the court. Legal procedures following the judgment will continue as per law. The verdict marks the conclusion of a case that remained under trial for several years before the court delivered its final decision.
