Meghalaya Spice Festival debuts in Mumbai to promote premium spices

Meghalaya Spice Festival

Shillong, Jan 28: Meghalaya Spice Festival will take place in Mumbai from January 30 to February 1, marking the state’s first dedicated event to promote premium spices and enhance market access for farmers and producer groups.

The festival, to be held at Jio World Drive in Bandra Kurla Complex, will bring together farmer producer organisations, cooperatives, and small enterprises from Meghalaya with buyers, exporters, and retail chains from across India and abroad.

A variety of Meghalaya’s high-quality spices will be on display, including GI-tagged Lakadong turmeric, ginger, black pepper, bay leaves, cinnamon, and local spice blends. Officials said the showcase highlights the state’s focus on organic cultivation, value addition, and certification standards.

The Brand Meghalaya pavilion will feature initiatives supporting rural enterprises and economic growth for farmers. The event will include business meetings between buyers and sellers, as well as culinary demonstrations to present the spices in practical use.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stated that the festival will provide farmers and producer groups with direct access to national and international markets. Agriculture Minister Timothy Shira said the initiative is part of efforts to increase farmer incomes and strengthen the entire spice value chain from production to marketing.

Organisers noted that hosting the festival in Mumbai, a major commercial hub, is intended to attract wider recognition for sustainably produced Meghalaya spices and encourage long-term trade partnerships.
